Day 398: Roxy's been laying a year today

And she's not pet food, chicken pate or baby food :o)

That could be her fate if she was a battery hen - yep, they put them out to slaughter at between 18 months to 2 years old, after they've been laying for between 12 to 18 months :o(

Anyway, I thought I'd tot up how many eggs she's laid in that year... and it's 319! Way to go girl! That's an 87% lay rate :o) That's over 6 eggs a week - so she'd still be alive if she was on a battery farm (they send their hens to slaughter when the egg rate drops below 6 a week).

On another note, it's official! Roxy is no longer a chicken (in her first year of lay and before her first moult) but... drum roll... a HEN! We think she had a mini moult over the summer - she lost all her feathers on her chin :o)

Right, better go to work! Happy birthday Roxy!
