Day 594: Chicks

EDITED TO ADD - new blog is here!

Wow I'm tired. I was so worried about them not being warm enough (they can die if they get cold) that I had trouble sleeping hehe. I went to bed at midnight, after I'd raised them up to be closer to the lamp (by shoving an inch thick piece of polystyrene underneath them) and made sure they couldn't get their heads stuck in the cage wires (covered the door up with an Easter Egg box!) and sorted out the floor, making sure they couldn't get stuck under the j-cloth by pegging it down. And then I checked them again at 4am and yes, they were fine! And again at 6:30am and put in some plastic mesh to help their feet grip. Did I tell you, they have HUUUUGE feet?

They do sleep a lot. And when they're not sleeping, they are cheeping, eating, drinking, preening, POOING, stretching and taking short flights with a few flaps! They smell a bit so good job they're shut in the spare loo. We'll give them a week or so to settle then we might transfer them into the garage.

I might start a chick blog! I wondered about weighing them regularly (not every day as I don't want to stress them) and keeping photos, just so we can see our little girls grow up :o)

Oh and names? Current favourites are:
  • masked superheroes (Zorro, Batman and A.N.Other) because of the stripes over their eyes...
  • Fish, Sausage and Fritter (as in Fish and CHEEPS, Sausage and CHEEPS and FRITTER and CHEEPS)
  • Or continue with the Hollywood Actress theme and call choose from Greta, Zsa Zsa, Grace, Marilyn or Brigitte.
Brigitte would be the one with the biggest stripe bridging (geddit?!) her face from one ear to the other. Grace would be the gentlest one. But I've been watching them and they don't have a graceful bone in their body! These chicks have never heard of the word AROUND - they never go around each other, they just barge straight through, under or OVER! Little cuties though ;o)

If you have my email address, feel free to vote for names!

PS Did I tell you, these are PURE BREEDS? Oooh super posh chicks! They'll lay naturally, in accordance with the seasons and when they'd be rearing their own chicks - so spring to late Autumn then resting and recharging over the winter. Pure breeds have much fewer problems with their laying tackle than hybrids (like Tallulah with her abdominal tumour) and also live longer. Hmm, have to get these names right as these girls could be around for 6 or 7 years!
